An OPC server is an application that communicates with various equipment in a factory to control the equipment and exchange data.
OPC stands for OLE for Process Control, which is a widely adopted industrial communication standard for process control. 1996 Microsoft and equipment control manufacturers jointly developed the standard, which is now being standardized by the OPC Foundation.
OPC has strengthened the relationship between suppliers and users, and has broadened the range of automation application options for equipment control on the user side. In addition, suppliers of automation have become more aware of the benefits of using OPC in their applications.
In a factory, there are machine tools, PLCs, various control devices, and a myriad of other devices in operation.
Each manufacturer that provides these devices provides OPC servers software to access and communicate with each control device. On the other hand, OPC client functions are incorporated into various applications for production planning and management.
As a result, both the equipment manufacturer and the user can perform data communication defined by the OPC standard, acquire data, write data, and control equipment without having to deal with the individual specifications of each product.
The standardization of OPC makes it possible to communicate data between devices and OPC servers across any vendor without depending on a specific vendor. The OPC servers can be used as a PC or PPC server in the field.
The OPC servers can communicate freely with PCs, PLCs, machine tools, etc. in the field. Even if the vendor is different, communication can be continued by following the defined protocol and commands.
OPC Servers can be connected to each device to perform READ/WRITE of production data according to the OPC standard.
The equipment side that connects to the OPC server can check whether the production is progressing according to the production plan for each type of product when the product is being manufactured, by following the flow below.
STEP-1: The application requests data to the OPC servers.
STEP-2: The OPC servers reads the information from the equipment to which it is connected.
STEP-3: The OPC servers writes the data to the application.
The feature of this system is that the OPC servers communicate with the device side in response to READ/WRITE requests, so the device side only needs to respond to these requests.
