A threaded plug generally refers to a tapered threaded fitting used to plug piping through which fluids (water, chemicals, oil, etc.) or gases (air, steam, gas, etc.) flow.
However, parallel screw plug is sometimes used for mold components, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment that are to be installed and removed many times.
The reason for this is that the female threads are not distorted.
Tapered threads may cause distortion of the threads when they are strongly tightened, and we do not recommend using them for parts that are repeatedly installed and removed.
Threaded plugs are used for everything from water and gas piping plugs in general households to high-pressure piping and chemical piping in plant facilities. Therefore, it is necessary to select the material according to the fluid and the environment in which it is used.
There are a wide variety of screw heads, including hexagonal, hexagon socket, and square head. Square-head plugs are often used in homes.
Since airtightness is required, tapered screw plugs (the threaded part of the plug is sloped to ensure airtightness as it is tightened) is used. It is common to use an application material or sealing tape for installation on a processed product.
Screw plugs are available in many materials and types.
For screw plugs used for outdoor use or for plugs in chemical piping, stainless steel should be selected. Needless to say, it is far more resistant to corrosion than steel. However, stainless steel (SUS304) components are approximately 2 to 4 times more expensive than steel (S25C). It is important to use different materials depending on the operating environment.
In addition, high-pressure piping is used in factories and plant facilities. In such environments, highly reliable plugs for high-pressure piping should be used. For piping with high working pressure, it is advisable to use a plug for high pressure after confirming that the "maximum working pressure classification" is within that range.
For hydraulic and pneumatic equipment that is repeatedly installed and removed, there are screw plugs with a flange (also available with a packing). These plugs have parallel threads and do not distort the female threads. Depending on the application, this type of plug can be considered for maintenance and servicing without damaging hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
