What Is an Alignment Tester?
An alignment tester is a device that measures the position, angle, and direction of the wheels, called the alignment of an automobile.
Alignment is the angle called camber, caster, toe, etc. for suspension parts, arm parts, and other parts that make up the suspension of an automobile.
If the alignment is not correct, the car may not run straight, the body may not be stable under braking, or the tires may wear unevenly, and it is necessary to adjust and maintain the proper value. An alignment tester is used to measure whether the alignment is correct or not.
Uses of Alignment Testers
The use of an alignment tester is to measure the alignment of an automobile.
Automobile alignment is primarily measured by:
- Camber: This indicates the amount of lean of the tires when the car is viewed from the front. When the tire is vertical, it is 0°. When the upper side of the tire is more open than the lower side, it is called positive camber, and when the lower side of the tire is more open than the upper side, it is called negative camber.
- Caster: When an automobile is viewed from the side, it is the tilt of the axis of steering, called the kingpin.
Toe: It is the angle of the tire opening when the car is viewed from above. Inward is called toe-in and outward is called toe-out.
Principle of Alignment Testers
There are two types of alignment testers: portable and stationary. Many portable types use analog alignment gauges that can be carried around. Stationary types generally use a CCD camera to read information from a reflector mounted on the wheel to measure alignment. Some testers measure alignment by rotating all four wheels on the tester in a simulated driving condition.
When adjustments are made after alignment is measured, emphasis is placed on the alignment of the rear wheels because the line of travel of the car is determined by the toe of the rear wheels.
Therefore, the order of alignment adjustment is as follows.
- Rear wheel camber → toe → thrust angle
- Front wheel caster → camber → toe
In recent years, advanced safety vehicles (ASV) with functions such as collision damage reduction brakes have become popular. In order for these advanced safety devices to function properly, calibration work to correct sensor misalignment, known as aiming, is required. Aiming work requires that the alignment is appropriate. Therefore, alignment testers that can make accurate measurements in a shorter time will be required in the future.
