What Is an Insert Ring?
An insert ring is mainly used for welding pipes or pipes butt-welded together. When welding different pipes, they are inserted inside the pipes to be welded and used to finish the back side of the welding surface neatly.
Normally, back-wave welding is required to finish the backside of piping, but back-wave welding requires a high level of skill, and without skill, small holes, bubbles, and other welding defects can occur on the inside of the piping.
An insert rings are also called insert ring for parts that are inserted inside vacuum tubing, but this article will discuss insert ring for welding in this article.
Uses of Insert Rings
Insert rings are used for butt welding of pipes and plates.
When butt-welding two pipes, the ends of the pipes are tightly welded together, and an insert rings are inserted inside the two pipes that are tightly welded together. First, the insert rings are fitted into the pipe on one side and temporarily welded. Then, the ends of the other pipe are fitted tightly together. The insert rings are then inserted into the inside of the pipe, and a part of the insert rings are exposed through the gap between the two pipes, so the exposed part is welded between the pipes, and the back side of the pipes can be finished neatly without any welding defects occurring on the back side of the pipes by melting in the welding material as in the normal welding process. The backside of the pipes can be finished neatly without welding defects on the backside of the pipes.
Principle of Insert Rings
The main type of ring is made of stainless steel. Since they are made of stainless steel, there is little risk of rusting or crevice corrosion to the base metal. The shape can be a flat washer or a ring with a T-shaped cross section.
In the case of T-shape welding, the part that is sandwiched between pipes is called the plate part, and the part that contacts the inside of the pipes is called the backing part, and the backing part is semicircular.
Since there is a risk of bubbles in the back wave in normal pipe welding, it is necessary to fill the air inside the pipe with shielding gas to keep moisture and dust, which cause bubbles, out of the back wave, but this is not necessary if insert rings are attached. However, this is not necessary if the Insert Rings are attached. The back side of the piping is sealed by simply melting the Insert Rings from the outside, eliminating the need to inject shielding gas.
By using an insert rings, there is no need to perform back-wave welding, which requires advanced techniques, and pipes can be butt-welded together safely and carefully.
