A Shore hardness tester is an instrument used to measure industrially defined hardness, called "shore hardness". Shore hardness is described as a "Number + SH".
This instrument determines Shore hardness by striking a diamond indenter against a sample from a certain height and measuring the height at which the indenter bounces up after impact.
Compared to other hardness measurement methods, the Shore hardness tester is used at various manufacturing sites because of its short measurement time and the portability of the measuring instrument.
Shore hardness testers are not widely used in Europe, and Vickers hardness testers, which can measure hardness more accurately, tend to be preferred.

Another disadvantage of the Shore hardness testers is the indenter must be dropped perpendicular to the sample, and the surface in contact with the indenter must be horizontal, which can lead to measurement errors. However, if one understands these characteristics and is able to make as accurate a measurement as possible, the Shore hardness testers, which can easily measure hardness, will be a useful tool in a variety of fields.
