What Is a Spiral Heat Exchanger?
A spiral heat exchanger, as the name suggests, is a heat exchanger that uses a spiral shape. It is characterized by the fluid becoming a spiral flow. From a chemical engineering point of view, the axial flow path has a low pressure drop due to its wide cross-sectional area, and the narrow channel spacing allows for heat exchange that brings the fluids closer together.
Spiral-shaped flow paths are more prone to turbulence than circular tube flow paths in multi-tube heat exchangers. Therefore, high heat conductivity can be obtained. The flow path can be flexibly varied in terms of plate width, etc., and is easy to design to suit the conditions.
Uses of Spiral Heat Exchangers
A heat exchanger is a device that exchanges heat by bringing a high-temperature fluid and a low-temperature fluid into contact with each other, and is mainly used in the field of energy conservation, for example, to use waste heat. They are also used for indirect heat exchange via a heat exchanger in cases where the fluids should not be in direct contact with each other.
When temperature conditions are severe, multiple heat exchangers are connected in series in a multi-tube heat exchanger, but spiral heat exchangers may be used with only one heat exchanger. Also, since the heat exchanger is less prone to contamination, it is also used to reduce the amount of cleaning required.
Principle of Spiral Heat Exchangers
The spiral heat exchangers consist of two metal plates wrapped around each other in a spiral shape. The turbulence in the flow path will result in a more efficient heat exchange.
The structure of two metal plates wrapped around each other allows the cross-sectional area of the flow path to be kept small. This allows the flow velocity in the heat exchanger to be increased, and a self-cleaning action that removes scale from the heat exchanger can be performed. Conversely, a slightly wider channel width can accommodate fluids containing solids.
The construction of spiral heat exchangers can be divided into three types depending on the type of fluid with which they come into contact. Type 1 is used for liquid-liquid applications with alternate end-welded heat transfer surfaces, Type 2 is used for gas-liquid applications where the gas side flow path is unsealed, and Type 3 has the spiral surface of Type 1 installed perpendicular to the ground. There is also a tower-top condenser type in which the top of the tower can be directly connected.
