What Is a Digital Isolator?
A digital isolator is a device that isolates digital signals.

Principle of Digital Isolators
There are two types of digital isolators: the magnetic isolation method and the capacitive isolation method.
- Magnetic Isolation Method
This is a digital isolator that use a coil. In transmitting and receiving, a coil is used to convert electric signals and magnetic energy. It can respond at high speed, but the faster the speed, the higher the current consumption. Also, the noise characteristics are inferior to the following capacitive isolation type. - Capacitive Isolation Method
This is a digital isolator using a capacitor. In transmitting and receiving, electrical signals are converted into charge and discharge by using capacitors. It has excellent noise characteristics and can be used at high speeds. However, the current consumption is independent of speed and becomes a disadvantage at low speeds.
Both methods have the advantage of long life and can be used at high speeds, and they have superior performance compared to previous isolators.
