A mat switch is a mat-type switch that detects when a person steps on it.
Generally, mat switches are placed in normally off-limits areas at factories and other workplaces, and are used to stop machinery in the vicinity in the event that workers accidentally step on them or they are forced to step on them in the event of an accident.
Unlike sensors such as light curtains and laser scanners that scan a specified space, these switches detect only the load on the floor surface, so there is no need to worry about false detection of moving parts such as robot arms, and they can be installed relatively easily without exception processing.
Mat switches are used to detect human intrusion into a specific area because they can detect a load over a certain level applied to any part of the sensing surface on the mat.
Examples of applications include intrusion detection systems for hazardous areas around industrial robots and moving machinery, security systems to detect intrusion into safes, doorways, etc., and passenger detection systems on bus steps.
Other examples include devices that detect the intrusion of animals into farms and sound a warning alarm, as well as for use as a sensory attraction in game arcades, etc.
Mat switches consists of a mat made of a flexible material such as rubber, on which a tape switch is placed. When a person steps onto the mat, the bead of the tape switch deforms and the switch turns on.
Because they are often used as safety devices, 4-wire tape switches are often used instead of the 2-wire type, which can detect a broken wire, enabling fail-safe design (a design that operates on the safe side in the event of a malfunction).
However, when selecting and installing mat switches, attention should be paid to the response time and installation area.
Although the response time of the mat switches itself is minute, less than several tens of milliseconds, the time required to complete an emergency stop of a moving machine varies depending on the specifications of the machine, so the mat switches must be installed at a distance where it can be stopped even if a person runs into the machine.
In addition, workers may try to jump over the mat switches because they do not want to stop the machine. Therefore, it is necessary to select mat switches that are wide enough to prevent people from jumping over them, or to make them physically inescapable by installing a door or other means.
