What Is a Current Meter?
A current meter is a device used to measure the velocity of water flowing in a river or air being discarded from a duct. The device can also function as a switch by incorporating a display, communication device, and other components. Uses of Current Meters
Current meters are used in a wide range of applications, including surveys of rivers and dams, and in production plants. Examples of use include river velocity surveys, exhaust gas velocity surveys, on-site control of resin inflow velocities, and control of chemical solution inflow velocities. When selecting a current meter, it is necessary to consider the range of velocities to be measured that it supports, durability, ease of maintenance, and whether it is a non-contact or contact type. Some current meters have built-in communication devices that allow monitoring from a distance, which is useful for improving efficiency.
Principles of Current Meters
The measuring principle of current meters is divided into two types: electric current meters using an impeller, and ultrasonic current meters. Current meters consist of a measuring section, a device that processes information, such as electrical signals emitted from the measuring section, and a communication device.
- Electric type
Electric current meters measure the current by measuring the number of revolutions of an impeller. A magnet is attached to the impeller, and the amount of change in the magnetic field caused by the rotation of the magnet is converted into an electrical signal and sent to the information processing section. The impeller must always face the direction in which the fluid to be measured flows, so the impeller is adjusted to face the direction of the fluid by attaching weights or other devices. - Ultrasonic type
In the ultrasonic type, ultrasonic waves are emitted toward the fluid, and the phase shift of the ultrasonic waves as they bounce off the surface of the water is transmitted to the data processing unit. The phase shift is then used to measure the flow velocity. Since it is non-contact and can measure from a distance, it is characterized by its ability to measure safely without disturbing the flow of the fluid.
