What Are Catch Tanks?
Catch Tanks are mainly used in internal combustion engines (gasoline and diesel engines).
In the field of motorsports, it is often required by regulations to be installed for safety reasons, and aftermarket parts for this purpose are sold by various companies.
Usage of Catch Tanks
Blow-by gases generated in the combustion process of an engine are usually reintroduced into the intake route (intake manifold inlet, etc.) via the PCV valve.
In this process, oil mist and sludge generated inside the engine are also reintroduced into the intake air, which causes oil to be burned at high loads and high RPM, resulting in white smoke. In addition, the oil mist may contaminate the intake passage, and the air cleaner may become wet with oil, reducing intake efficiency and causing oil to leak from the intake inlet.
In order to prevent these problems, Catch Tanks are installed in the engines of racing cars and other vehicles that make heavy use of high-revolution engines.
Principle of Catch Tanks
Catch Tanks can be broadly classified into two types: those with baffle plates inside and those without baffle plates. In particular, the former is called a "separate type" and is characterized by the fact that the blow-by gas inlet pipe and outlet pipe are separated by a partition plate called a baffle.
While the former type separates gas-liquid by hitting oil mist against the baffle plate, the latter type separates gas-liquid by extending the blow-by gas inlet pipe to a deeper part than the outlet pipe.
However, in the latter type, the blow-by gas inlet pipe is easily blocked by oil accumulation, and the pressure inside the crankcase may increase due to blow-by gas that has lost its escape route, so it is necessary to drain the oil in a shorter span than with the separate type.
Although general-purpose products are available from various manufacturers, it is necessary to select the appropriate capacity according to the engine displacement and oil volume to be used, and to firmly fix it to a solid part of the engine or vehicle when installing it.
