What Is a Slide Core Unit?
A slide core unit is one of the parts used in a mold. It is required when forming a shape with an "undercut," where the mold cannot be opened because it is bound in the shape (undercut) when the mold is pulled out. Generally, the more parts required, the higher the tooling cost, so it is important to minimize it as much as possible by dividing the parts or by other means. For plastic parts that have not been painted or otherwise finished, many of the mold marks on a slide core unit are visible, and this can be a clue to understanding the mold structure of the part.
Uses of Slide Core Units
Slide cores are used in molds for molding molded parts that have a shape known as an "undercut." This is necessary for molding shapes, such as side hole shapes that would be bound by the mold when attempting to pull the mold out using the normal mold structure. To take a familiar example, a simple cup without a handle can be pulled out of a normal mold, but a cup with a handle would require slide core units because of the "undercut" shape that would occur. Since undercut shapes are more likely to occur in parts with complex shapes, it is important to take measures, such as dividing the part into sections to avoid undercut shapes.
Principle of Slide Core Units
Slide core units consist of an open/close mechanism using "pins" or "cam blocks" that automatically opens and closes the slide core units in direction perpendicular to the direction in which the mold opens in conjunction with the mold opening motion. This allows various shapes to be made, but the more parts required, the more complicated the mold structure becomes, and the higher the molding cost becomes. Another disadvantage is that it is inferior to conventional molds in terms of durability and maintainability. Therefore, although some shapes are unavoidable in product design, in order to reduce the initial cost and unit cost of parts, we often consider whether undercut shapes can be reduced by dividing parts or other methods.
