A wave spring is a spring made of coiled plate wire that has been formed into a wave shape.
Compared to ordinary coil springs, wave spring have several superior characteristics. They are more compact than coil springs of the same diameter, which means that they are lighter and can withstand higher loads. The downsizing of the spring itself also allows for downsizing of the unit that houses it, and the ripple effect is tremendous.
Wave springs are used in a wide range of applications, including automotive parts, where coil springs were previously used. The height of the springs can be lowered, making it possible to use them in fields where disc springs were previously used.
In addition, the functions that are achieved by arranging several small-diameter coil springs in a ring can now be replaced by a single wave spring of the same ring diameter, further expanding the range of applications.
Wave springs are said to differ from ordinary coil springs in terms of spring characteristics and the mechanism of force generation, such as stress. It is known that by coiling a plate material processed into a wavy shape, nonlinearity is generated in the spring characteristics.
Non-linearity is caused by the fact that the convex part of the wave springs and the concave part at the same position that goes around the wave springs change from point contact when no external force is applied to linear contact when an external force is applied, which has the effect of reducing the spring width of the wave springs.
It has also been found that wave springs are subject to bending stress, and that the principal stress is greatest on the inside diameter side of the wavy concavity, and that the maximum value of this principal stress is proportional to the magnitude of the load.
The nonlinearity of the spring properties and the calculation of the bending stresses confirm that the actual properties of wave springs can be approximated fairly well.
