A boost regulator is a voltage conversion method used to boost the input voltage in an electric circuit. It is used when the power supply voltage is low and insufficient to operate an electric circuit. By using a boost regulator to increase the voltage supplied, the energy necessary to drive the circuit is applied, preventing the circuit from stopping or malfunctioning and ensuring safe operation.
The boost regulator is a method used in voltage conversion ICs, such as boost DC/DC converters.
Boost regulators are used to supply low-voltage power to electrical equipment.
Examples of such applications include low-power consumption devices, such as portable electrical equipment powered by AA batteries. In small devices with only a few AA batteries that can be inserted into the device, the voltage from the two or three AA batteries may not be sufficient to operate the internal circuitry. In such cases, boost regulators are used to drive the equipment by boosting the voltage to the operating voltage value that drives the electric circuit.
The circuit configuration of boost regulators consists of an input power supply, inductor, MOSFET (switch), diode, capacitor, and output terminal. When the switch is OFF, current flows in the circuit in the order of input power supply → inductor → diode → capacitor and output terminal (parallel connection) → input power supply. When the switch is ON, the circuit is as follows: input power supply → inductor → MOSFET → input power supply.
The principle of operation is explained below: When the MOSFET switch is ON, current flows through the inductor, and the inductor accumulates energy. Then, when the MOSFET switch is OFF, the voltage resulting from the sum of the energy stored in the inductor and the energy of the input power supply is applied to the capacitor and output terminals. Since the energy stored in the inductor is added, the output voltage is higher than that of the input power supply. By repeating this ON/OFF operation at high speed, the input voltage can be boosted in a stable manner.
