This section provides an overview for eccentric presses as well as their applications and principles. Also, please take a look at the list of 7 eccentric press manufacturers and their company rankings.

An eccentric press is a machine tool that presses by converting rotational motion into vertical or horizontal motion using an eccentric shaft.
It is sometimes called an eccentric-shaft press or a manual press, and is used for cutting, drilling, and bending by attaching a die.
The eccentric here refers to the eccentric shaft that converts rotational motion into reciprocating motion of the slide, and the eccentric part located at the position connecting the main shafts of the eccentric shafts (spindle).
As an aside, "eccentric" can also mean outlandish in action or character, and is derived from this eccentric motion.
Eccentric presses are used for press fitting and punching of metal sheets. For example, a die is made to match the stroke and the committal hole, and then attached to the die to cut the corners of a thin steel plate with a thickness of about 0.3 mm.
The former has a built-in stopper bolt and can be stopped in the middle of its stroke. The latter type, also called the standard type, has adjustment bolts on both sides that allow precise height and other adjustments of the stroke.
Eccentricity is a mechanical element often used in steam locomotives to convert the rotary motion of an eccentric shaft into a linear reciprocating motion of a vertical or horizontal rod. The principle of eccentric presses are similar: by turning a round handwheel, the eccentric shaft is converted from a rotary motion to a stroke of vertical motion, which is used to press work through a die.
In the case of a hand press, the pressing motion is linked to the raising and lowering of a lever, but in the case of eccentric presses, the mechanism of the press differs in that turning the handle causes a continuous up-and-down motion like a piston. The combination of this up-and-down motion and a die suitable for the committal hole enables corner cutting and punching of metal sheets with ease.
These presses are usually of the handwheel type, like manual sewing machines, and can often be found on the used equipment auction market these days, but some specialized machine manufacturers also produce and sell large automated eccentric presses.
