An air gripper is a mechanical component that holds the inner surface of a workpiece by friction between a hollow, cylindrical piece of rubber that expands into a doughnut shape when air is injected into it. A gripper that holds the outer surface of a workpiece using the same principle is called an air gripper.
Since there is a wide range of applicable workpiece inner diameters, for example, φ16~21, one air gripper can grip multiple types of workpieces.
Chloroprene rubber is used, but silicone is also available for areas requiring high heat resistance or for the food industry.
Air grippers are used to transport glass bottles, PET bottles, cans, and printer drums that can only be touched on the inside, as well as for air leak testing of fuel tanks, mufflers, pumps, etc.
They are also used for winding and transporting rolled products such as saran wrap.
Taking advantage of its features of being able to grip workpieces of different diameters with a single size, they are used in the hands (end-effectors) of industrial robots and cooperative robots, and are also active in gripping the inside of workpieces.
The silicone type is chemically stable, has low temperature dependence, and features of excellent cold and heat resistance, and is also used in the transportation of food and clothing.
The air picker is one of the machine parts that can grip and release a workpiece weighing up to 70 times its own weight by injecting and exhausting air reliably and at high speed without damaging the gripping surface.
The concentric expansion of the rubber part allows for the clamping of workpieces of different diameters with a single size, thereby reducing the man-hours required for chuck changes.
On the other hand, if the rubber cracks or leaks from scratches due to aging, the chuck loses its gripping function, so care must be taken to avoid sharp objects, to prevent deterioration due to ultraviolet rays, or to select materials that match the environment.
Since the workpiece is held by friction, a sufficient safety factor must be estimated when clamping workpieces with a low coefficient of friction, workpieces with substances on the surface such as water or oil that reduce the frictional force, or parts with a shape that is prone to slippage.
Since the clamping force for fragile parts can be adjusted by supplying pressure, it is used with an air regulator.
