What Is a Pillar Clamp?
A pillar clamp is a component used to secure two or more pillars together. The "muff" is a similar tool, but it is suitable for equipment that is frequently assembled and disassembled, since it is fixed by hand-tightened screws. A pillar clamp, on the other hand, uses bolts and nuts to more strongly secure the device, making them suitable for long-term installation or for supporting heavy laboratory equipment.
Uses of Pillar Clamps
When connecting and securing supports to each other, if the connection is loose, the entire apparatus may collapse in the event of an impact, causing damage to the apparatus or injury to the user. Although muffles can be used to connect the support columns, they are only tightened with screws, so they may not be strong enough to continue installation for a long period or to support heavy objects.
Therefore, if strength is required, pillar clamps are used, which can be secured using bolts and nuts. In addition to vertically connecting two support columns, there are also products that allow them to stand side by side horizontally, and products that allow the connection part to rotate.
Principle of Pillar Clamps
The main body of pillar clamps is made of aluminum alloy, stainless steel, or synthetic resin. There is a hole through which the pillar can be threaded, and after the pillar is threaded, it is secured in place with a bolt and nut. While muff clamps are simply tightened with the end of a screw, pillar clamps are stronger because of the structure of the pillar clamps that is clamped through the hole.
Since there is a wide variety of shapes, you can use different types of clamps to assemble the supports at will. An example is shown below.
- A structure with two vertical holes through which the posts can be placed perpendicular to each other.
- Two horizontal holes through which the posts can be placed side by side.
- A cylindrical arm extends from the clamp, to which a further clamp or muff can be attached.
- Pillar clamps with a square hole through which the clamp can be attached to a square pillar to prevent it from rotating.
When selecting pillar clamps, make sure that it matches the thickness and shape of the pillar. Also, a variety of pillar clamps can be used to create complex combinations of pillars, but if they are not balanced properly, the equipment may topple over. Keep in mind that the center of gravity should be stable during assembly.
