This section provides an overview for hand lappers as well as their applications and principles. Also, please take a look at the list of 9 hand lapper manufacturers and their company rankings.

A hand lapper is a tool used to perform polishing work by hand without using a machine. It is shaped like a toothbrush and has a handle with an abrasive (grinding wheel) attached to the end of the handle.
It is mainly used for chamfering, repair and correction by polishing for burr and gouge removal, etc.
Some products are also called hand horns or hand stones.
Abrasive stones are made of various materials depending on the uses of the abrasive (see below for details).
As the name suggests, hand lappers are used for very fine grinding work.
They can be used for jig correction and finishing, tool correction, such as cutting tool edge removal and grinding, edge setting, and edge killing, as well as mold correction and adjustment.
In addition to the maintenance of these types of machine tools and industrial machinery in manufacturing, the hand lapper can also be used for the maintenance and sharpening of knives, carving knives, and other household, private studio/workshop, and do-it-yourself tools.
The grinding wheel of a hand lapper can be selected according to the roughness and hardness of the grinding wheel, depending on the object to be polished or corrected.
A higher the grain size of a wheel on a hand lapper will produce a finer the finish.
For example, the grain size of #240 for rough finishing, #300 for normal finishing, and #400 or higher for precision finishing can be selected according to the application.
A typical grain crystal used in abrasives is boron carbide, called boron carbide.
Boron carbide is second only to diamond and cubic boron nitride, which are considered the hardest materials, with a Mohs hardness of 9.497.
Boron carbide hand lappers are mainly used for rough to normal finish roughness, but diamond abrasive hand lappers can be used for more precise finishing and for the care and adjustment of harder tools.
