A portable air conditioner is a compact cooler, also called a spot air conditioner or spot cooler.
A portable air conditioner do not differ greatly from the structure of air conditioners, but they cannot automatically discharge the condensed water inside, so the water that has accumulated in the tank inside the unit must be manually dumped. Also, since it is a cooler, it does not produce warm air.
The only functions are power on/off and switching between low, medium, and high. Although cold fans are often confused with air conditioners, they are devices that cool using the vaporization heat of water or ice, and thus differ from air conditioners in both principle and effect.
Portable air conditioners are used to send cool air to employees in large spaces, such as factories and warehouses, with pinpoint accuracy. They are very effective in preventing heat stroke in hot weather conditions.
In addition to factories, warehouses, and other large spaces, they are also used for outdoor breaks in gardens, garages, outdoor work, golf driving ranges, and other outdoor locations. However, they are not suitable when you want to cool an entire room. They are effective when you want to send cold air with pinpoint accuracy.
If you really want to cool an entire room, it is recommend that you use a large fan, such as a factory fan, to blow air and use the swing function to diffuse the cool air.
Portable air conditioners are similar to air conditioners in that they are equipped with a compressor and a heat exchanger. It is a device that draws in air and discharges the cooled air inside while at the same time discharging the hot air from the cooling process. The cold air is discharged locally, but if the hot air discharged at the same time is not discharged outside the room, the hot air and cold air will mix in the room.
For this reason, some units are equipped with a special duct for discharging hot air to the outside. As mentioned above, there is no mechanism to drain water generated from the cooler to the outside, so it must be dumped manually on a regular basis.
Water generated from the cooler accumulates in a tank installed in the main unit. Some units automatically stop when the tank is full, while others have a function to evaporate the condensate water without discarding it and release it with the exhaust air.
Since regular air conditioners consume a lot of electricity, portable air conditioners are useful in places where not much power is available. However, even portable air conditioners do not consume a small amount of power, so using them in multiple locations at the same time may cause the breaker to trip.
When we think of portable air conditioners, we usually think of commercial coolers, but recently the number of portable air conditioners for home use has been increasing. Since there are a variety of types available, the following points should be checked when selecting one.
In the case of coolers, kw (kilowatt) is the unit of capacity. The higher the value, the more power and cooling capacity it has. A typical room air conditioner has a cooling capacity of 2.2 kw.
For commercial use, 2.5kw is recommended, and for home use, 2.0kw or less is recommended.
The power supply should be either 100V or 200V. If it is for home use or if it is not that large, we recommend the 100V type, which has a general plug. Also, if the unit is used in a factory or warehouse and powered by power (3-phase 200V), a 100V unit will consume less power and have higher cooling efficiency.
Residential air conditioners have only one vent, but some commercial portable air conditioners has one to three vents, and even those with only one vent have the option of branching ducts. Note that more air outlets allow multiple people to use the unit, but the amount of air blown is reduced.
When we think of spot air conditioners, we usually think of portable air conditioners, but recently, larger types are becoming available. They are used in crowded places such as highway service areas and outdoor events.
It should be noted that portable air conditioners may not be as effective depending on the environment in which they are used.
