What Is Phosphorus Oxychloride?
Phosphorus oxychloride is a chemical with a tetrahedral structure centered on phosphorus, also known as phosphoryl chloride. It is a colorless, fuming liquid with a pungent odor.
The vapor of phosphorous oxychloride is heavier than air. It reacts violently with water, producing decomposition products including heat, hydrogen chloride, and phosphoric acid.
Moisture in the air also produces hydrogen chloride gas, which causes fuming.
Phosphorus oxychloride is made by reacting phosphorus trichloride with oxygen and oxidizing it directly.
Phosphorus pentachloride, made by the action of chlorine on phosphorus trichloride, is also produced by decomposing it with water.
Phosphorus trichloride is obtained by reacting phosphorus with chlorine.
Uses of Phosphorus Oxychloride
Phosphorus oxychloride are used in the manufacture of plasticizers (tricresyl phosphate), hydraulic fluids, gasoline additives, and fire retardants. It is also used in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals (sulfa drugs, Botamine B1, etc.), dyes, phosphorus pesticides, fragrances, raw materials for nonflammable films, and uranium ore extractants. Furthermore, it is used as a diffusing agent in the semiconductor manufacturing process.
