What Is an Area Sensor?
An area sensor is a sensor that detects people and objects within a predetermined area.
Uses of Area Sensors
Example 1: Detection of Worker Intrusion
Area sensors are used to detect worker intrusion for safety measures in areas designated as hazardous areas around machinery, such as production facilities.
Application Example 2: Detection of Objects Attached to Unmanned Vehicles
This system is used to detect the direction in which AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles) travel in automated production plants and to detect objects that intrude within a certain distance around the AGVs.
Application Example 3: Human Detection
Area sensors are also used to detect people for opening and closing automatic doors and turning on gate lights.
Principle of Area Sensors
Area sensors are required to have the ability to detect objects within a set range.
Infrared, ultrasonic, and visible light are commonly used in general area sensors.
When Infrared Light Is Used as the Detection Medium
When infrared rays are used as the detection medium for human detection sensors as area sensors for home use, the detection method is based on the difference in sensed temperature when a gate light or security lighting is turned on, or when a faucet valve is opened or closed, and a mechanism is used to convert the temperature difference into an electrical signal after detecting it in the detection area.
When Ultrasonic Waves Are Used as the Detection Medium
When sound waves are blocked by an object to be detected, or when the time required for sound waves to be reflected back from the surface of the object to be detected is measured and detected, a mechanism is used to convert the reflected sound waves into an electrical signal for detection.
When Visible Light Is Used as the Detection Medium
Similar to the photoelectric sensor principle, the sensor consists of a light emitting part and a light receiving part. When the emitted light is intercepted or reflected by the detected object, the amount of light received changes, and the light receiving part detects this change and converts it into an electrical signal for detection.
